A petition has been filed before the Madras High Court seeking the removal of a commercial complex and public toilets that were allegedly constructed by filling a quarry pond located on government land in Thiruneermalai. The plea states that the local municipal authorities filled the pond using soil and construction debris and went on to construct five commercial complexes along with a public toilet at the site. The High Court has admitted the petition and directed the concerned authorities to file their response within four weeks. According to the petitioner, a resident of Thirumangai Azhwarpuram in Thiruneermalai, the quarry pond had existed in the area for several decades. Over time, the deep depression left by quarrying gradually evolved into a water body. The petition further states that the pond played a crucial role in preventing flooding during the monsoon season. With the water body now filled and closed, the area faces an increased risk to public safety and flooding. It is also alleged that toilets have been constructed directly on the former water body. The pond is said to have been at least 50 feet deep and was filled completely with construction debris by the authorities. The petitioner has raised concerns that the loss of the water body has disrupted natural drainage and could lead to serious environmental and safety issues in the locality.
