The Tamil Nadu government has imposed an immediate three-month ban on the interstate transportation of rough stone and its aggregates, including Manufactured Sand (M-Sand), metal jelly, crushed stone, building stones, ballast, road construction stones, millstones, hand chakkis, and other quarry products. The restriction has come into force with immediate effect. The temporary ban has been introduced to curb illegal mining and unauthorized transportation of mineral resources while ensuring adequate availability of construction materials for projects within Tamil Nadu. However, consignments destined for the Union Territory of Puducherry, including Karaikal, have been exempted from the restriction. The government has invoked a recently introduced provision under the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Illegal Mining, Transportation, and Storage of Minerals and Minerals Dealers Rules, 2011, enabling authorities to temporarily prohibit the interstate movement of minerals and mineral-based products to strengthen enforcement against illegal mining activities. District administrations, police authorities, and officials from departments regulating mineral transportation have been directed to maintain strict surveillance at border checkpoints. They have also been instructed to coordinate enforcement efforts, conduct regular inspections, and create awareness among transporters and quarry operators to ensure compliance with the order. The ban is expected to improve the availability of M-Sand and other essential construction materials for residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects within Tamil Nadu. However, neighboring states that depend on Tamil Nadu for the supply of M-Sand and stone aggregates could face shortages, potentially leading to increased construction costs and project delays. The government is expected to review the impact of the restriction after the three-month period before taking any further decision on extending or modifying the order.
