Tamil Nadu Government Boosts Cooperative Loans for Women Entrepreneurs

The Tamil Nadu government has decided to expand its Entrepreneurship Credit Scheme by restructuring cooperative lending to support a wider range of beneficiaries. The initiative, which was previously focused mainly on members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs), will now be broadened to include young entrepreneurs and economically weaker sections of society, with the aim of encouraging entrepreneurship and improving access to affordable credit. The expansion is part of the state's efforts to strengthen the cooperative banking sector and create more opportunities for individuals who wish to start or grow small businesses. By extending financial assistance to a larger section of the population, the government aims to promote self-employment, generate livelihoods, and support inclusive economic development. Under the revised approach, cooperative banks and cooperative credit societies will continue to play a key role in providing loans to eligible applicants. These institutions have traditionally offered financial assistance for various welfare and livelihood initiatives, including support for agriculture, small businesses, and community-based development programs. As part of the latest initiative, the government has directed the Cooperation Department to increase the number of loans sanctioned under the Entrepreneurship Credit Scheme by 25%. Officials have also been instructed to expand the scheme's reach so that aspiring entrepreneurs from underserved and disadvantaged communities can benefit from easier access to credit. The expanded scheme is expected to improve financial inclusion by making institutional credit more accessible to first-time entrepreneurs who often face challenges in obtaining loans through conventional banking channels. Easier access to affordable finance is expected to help beneficiaries establish new enterprises, expand existing businesses, create employment opportunities, and contribute to local economic growth. Industry experts believe the move could strengthen Tamil Nadu's micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) ecosystem by encouraging entrepreneurship in both urban and rural areas. Increased cooperative lending is also expected to support women entrepreneurs, youth-led startups, and small business owners, helping drive sustainable economic development across the state. The revised Entrepreneurship Credit Scheme is expected to enhance the role of cooperative financial institutions in supporting inclusive growth while fostering innovation, self-employment, and long-term business development in Tamil Nadu.
