The Tamil Nadu government has officially decided to discontinue the proposed Parandur Greenfield Airport project and instead focus on expanding Chennai International Airport at Meenambakkam. The revised plan aims to increase the airport's annual passenger handling capacity to 45 million by 2045, making it the state's primary aviation hub for the coming decades. According to airport authorities, Chennai International Airport's existing infrastructure is expected to reach its maximum capacity by 2035 unless major expansion works are undertaken. To address future passenger demand, authorities have recommended the construction of a new satellite terminal (Terminal 5) on vacant land located between the airport's existing runways. The proposed terminal will be integrated with the current airport facilities and is expected to include additional boarding gates, expanded security screening areas, improved passenger circulation, and multiple entry and exit points to reduce congestion. As part of the expansion, another Terminal 5-linked facility has also been proposed near the airport's old VIP zone. This development is intended to support future passenger growth and improve overall airport operations. The decision follows years of public opposition to the Parandur Greenfield Airport project. Local residents and farmers had raised concerns over the potential loss of wetlands, water bodies, agricultural land, and the environmental impact of the proposed development. While the Parandur project has been shelved, the government has indicated that the possibility of developing a second airport in the future remains open, provided an environmentally suitable location is identified and the concerns raised during the Parandur proposal are adequately addressed. For now, the expansion of Chennai International Airport remains the centrepiece of Tamil Nadu's revised aviation strategy. The planned infrastructure upgrades, including the new satellite terminal, improved airport access, and enhanced cargo-handling facilities, are expected to strengthen Chennai's position as one of India's major aviation gateways while meeting growing passenger demand over the next two decades.
